Mod your Fedora 12 box

Just after having a fresh install of Fedora 12, I decided to mod the boring desktop it provides and put some features of more user friendly flavours of Linux like Ubuntu in it. Follow the text to get your boring desktop shine like this one… 😉

Enable Root
I like 2 be in for that,

edit following line in /etc/pam.d/gdm and /etc/pam.d/gdm-password using sudo

auth required user != root quiet

REPLACE root WITH test. Save file

Yum settings
I got some problem with the default config of repos so,

change repo files –> /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-update.repo
1. uncomment baseurl and comment mirror. Remember to change $releasever and $basearch with your version (eg 12) and arch (eg i386)
2. or, modifybaseurl according to your repo eg.

3. add your own repo with proper format and baseurl

Using RPMfusion repos (for mp3 codecs etc)

run as root —>

rpm -Uvh

Simply attempt to play any mp3. it will prompt for required codecs and download them automatically.

The Ubuntu Feel
Download the gtk-murrine engine from PackageKit (Murrine-GTK2) and download the Dusk and Firefox themes from here :
Read the page for more info.

Also, go to System –> Desktop Effects and enable Compiz for some awesome desktop effects

gdesklets on root
download gDesklets using PackageKit or yum. Then,

edit as root -> /usr/bin/gdesklets
comment line 27 –

And thats it! Download nice walls from to spice up the desktop!
